What is economic crime

June 23, 2021

Economic crime is in many respects a specific type of crime. For various reasons, and in particular, for the high amounts of material gain that perpetrators gain by committing such financial crimes, economic crime has an unduly devastating effect on the entire social system – especially if it is an organized economic crime.

Organized economic crime is characterized by top expertise and high levels of professionalism, and by the perpetrators who connect different structures and exploit diverse legal, national and/or international, opportunities. Legal forms of entrepreneurship are used as a cover-up for criminal activity. There is an increasing appearance of close cooperation and intersection among criminal groups which cooperate flawlessly when necessary and in order to facilitate the attainment of certain common interests.
